Just before a downpour

Just before a downpour

The air in the Colosseum of Rome weighed heavy with tourists, visitors imagining the triumphs and losses in such an enormous arena of ‘entertainment’. Yes. Entertainment.
Our tour guide mentioned that gladiators signed a contract, much like that used in our professional sports leagues, in which they basically agreed to money for the risk of whenever their life would be taken by the circumstances given…all for the cost of entertainment. I felt a heaviness…then the rains. I wanted no umbrella, no hat. I needed the water to purify my mind, my spirit and those of the souls who walked alongside of me that day.
