commedia dell’arte

commedia dell'arte

A theatrical art form of the 1600s in Italy, la Commedia dell’Arte dealt with improvisational theater for those in the piazze who could not afford the theater. Foibles and follies of the times as well as tragedy and comedy were thrust into town squares where people could attempt to forget their everyday plight. Thus was a new genre of entertainment born. Money and masquerade, treachery and treason, imagination and irreverence delighted the powerless. Listen to conversation today among the people and consider which masks you witness in today’s world.
